My blood pressure skyrocketed this past evening upon hearing the news about Ed Cookie Jarvis. There
were two big Ed's in the sport of competitive eating. One was Ed Krachie the Mickey Mantle of the sport and
the other Ed Jarvis the Babe Ruth of the sport. Mantle hit home runs but nobody hit more home runs than
the Big Bambino. Ed Jarvis is a giant. Time and time again Ed Cookie Jarvis has come through in the clutch.
He has more eating titles and compiled more wins than any other competitive eater in competitive eating
history. and has the jacket to prove it. Ed Jarvis not only won but he knew how to win and win big. He
showed no mercy in burying his opponent and made the sport what it is today. His legendary battles at the
table with Sonyatheblackwidow Thomas will forever be etched in the echelons of the sport. For one brief
moment at the Carnegie Deli in May 2002 i was able to push this powerhouse of a specimen to the limits of
human endurance in a 5 minute Pickle Eating contest. Several years later we did everything in our power to
hype the rematch to the hilt and nearly pulled off an appearance on the David Letterman show. The publicity
surrounding the rematch was so huge that i nearly secured a spot in the 2004 Wingbowl. The three amigos
Krazy Kevin , Ed Jarvis and Don Moses Lerman became the inspiration for Beautifulbrian.com. When those
symbolic names faded into the sunset do did BB.com . Before Joey Chestnut, Sonya Thomas and Pat
Bertolleti there was Ed Jarvis who singlehandedly dominated the sport for nearly 4 years. He had the
knockout power of George Foreman and the stamina and endurance of Larry Holmes . If you remember
Larry Holmes ignored adversity and beat any opponent that stood side by side with him in the boxing ring
until he met up with a Mike Tyson. Larry Holmes got out at the right time Same applied to Ed Jarvis until he
realized that too much of Sonya Thomas & Joey Chestnut were cramping his style. Ed Jarvis got out at the
right time. After the Carnegie shook up the world miracle on 57th st in 2002 , i started rubbing it in and
eventually it got back to him. The IFOCE wasnt having any part of this non sanctioned victory of mine so i
decided to self promote with some trash talk of my own. Although it might have appeared to some that Ed
Jarvis and i were on the outs, it was just the opposite. It was all about promoting another grudge match and
grudge matches for the most part always sell. During the past few years and even after his retirement , Ed
Jarvis has still managed to stay in contact with most of his fellow IFOCE mates even though his busy
schedule might prevent him at times from maintaining that special bond he has formed with competitive
eating fans and friends throughout the years. Ed Jarvis has never walked away from a challenge. He has
conquered almost every challenge set before him. He has accomplished almost everything one man can
dream of in one lifetime. A wonderful loving wife, son and daughter , a beautiful 4100 sq ft home in Suffolk
County, and of course one cannot forget his legendary achievements in the sport of competitive eating
which has clearly earned him a spot in the hall of fame. Recently he fought the battle of the bulge shedding
over 100 lbs while coming extremely close to his projected goal of 325 lbs committing himself to a strict diet
and exercise regimen. A story book ending for a man on a mission and mission nearly accomplished until
just recently when a report came in through a news source that Ed Cookie Jarvis had been diagnosed with
thyroid cancer. I received the news as i was driving home from work on Feb 3 2010 which just happened to
fall on the same day Buddy Holly Richie Valens and the Big Bopper perished in a plane crash in Idaho
51yrs to the day. Ed Jarvis is only 43 yrs of age. A diagnosis of the big "C" should not be in this mans past
present or future by any stretch of the imagination. Ed Jarvis has never dwelled on the negative and believe
me he has seen his share of the negative and then some. Ed Jarvis has always lived life to its fullest which
is why he will continue to live life to its fullest and crush this minor distraction without a problem. Thyroid
cancer is the least of the lethal. If you had a choice , thyroid and skin cancer are the cancers you would
prefer to be diagnosed with as opposed to the others . However the big C is the big C and any time the
diagnosis is indeed Cancer, its certainly nothing to sneeze about. . Ed Jarvis will crush this obstacle the
same way he has crushed his eating opponents at the table. Ed Jarvis has contributed his hard earned cash
to more charitable organizations than anyone i know. He is a warrior , a friend a family man and most
importantly a fighter to the end. Aside from my grandfather who called all family members until his death in
1964, Ed is the first to pick up the phone and wish you a Happy New Year . My prayers are with you my
friend . You will pull through this minor dilemma with flying colors.
